Would you rather live a short life with freedom and choice or a long life without either? Montag is a law-abiding firefighter. Firemen don't put out fires; they set fires to books or houses with books in them. Throughout the novel, Montag starts changing until he is a new person. He changes his whole life to one belief. The belief is that books should be read and the knowledge should be shared and known. The main factors that changed him were the meeting of a young girl named Clarisse and the death of an old lady and the destruction of her books. He believed that books should be shared and known so much that he killed his boss and left his whole life behind to start a new life trying to change the world. He finally wondered what could be in the books. Something so great that out of respect or need someone would kill themselves instead of being without them. He then stole some books and brought them home and his wife doesn't know what to say, Montag says. “There must be something in books that we can't imagine to make a woman stay in a burning house.”(Page 65 Fahrenheit 451) From that moment on Montag started reading, learning and interacting with an old man who had the same beliefs Montag had. By this point, Montag had changed in so many ways. The main ones were he learned how to question, remember, and contribute. Meeting Clarrise and talking to her made him question the world about all things about it, but that was just the beginning. By the end of the book he learned to remember, he didn't just learn just how to remember books but remembered how to love and care for things. Both of these led to him learning how to contribute to what he believes and how to stand up for what he cares about, which was discouraged in his
