The tragic end to the love of Romeo and Juliet is the fault of several people but, one person could be the main cause. In Shakepeare’s Romeo and Juliet the star crossed lovers both suffer a perilous end at the conclusion of the play. One man is the reason this couple died, Mercutio. Mercutio is one of Romeo’s best friends who dies in act three scene one of the play. So if he died so early on how did he cause the deaths of Romeo and Juliet? The actions of this character led to the end of himself and the end of the forbidden lovers. We meet Mercutio in scene four of act one he is with Romeo and Benvolio. In act three scene one Tybalt is ready to fight Romeo but Romeo wants peace because he just married Juliet. Tybalt picks at Romeo and tries to get him to fight but Romeo declines. Since Romeo will not fight Mercutio draws his sword on Tybalt and fights him. Romeo and Benvolio try to break up the fight but Mercutio still gets stabbed. Mercutio then dies cursing “A plague o’both your houses!”(Romeo & Juliet. 3.1.59). Romeo then goes to fight and kill Tybalt. Romeo killing Tybalt causes the Prince to banish Romeo. If Mercutio wouldn’t have drew his sword on Tybalt he would not have died. Mercutio’s death led to the banishing of Romeo which led to the death of Romeo and Juliet. Mercutio’s actions led to the tragic end of the star-crossed lovers. The Friar and Nurse were just preventing suicide and there faulty actions came later in the story. Mercutio convincing Romeo to go to the ball was early on and really the beginning of Romeo and Juliet’s relationship. Tybalt also could not be the cause of Romeo and Juliet’s demise because Mercutio drew the sword first. Mercutio’s death caused the banishment of Romeo.
