Born in 1816, in Virginia, he dreamed of growing up in the military. He graduated 50th in his class from the United States Military in 1837, and after assisted soldiers in the Seminole War. Early later became an attorney, but his career was interrupted when he chose to fight in the Mexican War. He voted against secession, but later joined the confederacy. Early rose through the ranks until he became a lieutenant general. Described as eccentric, outspoken, opinionated, and a bad old man, he was a strong figure throughout the war. Even after a gunshot injury, he came back two months later ready to continue fighting. When a newly appointed Lieutenant came to him with news that two women had been posing as male soldiers for two years, he did what any general would do at the time, he accused them of being prostitutes and had them sent to Castle Thunder, where they remained for three weeks. In November of 1864, they were released and sent home in the same uniforms they were arrested in months before. These two women were Tom Parker and Bob Morgan, also known as Mary and Mollie
