In 1517, Pope Leo X sold indulgences to those of the church. Indulgences were basically tickets into the gateways of heaven. This angered Luther which made him create the 95 theses. The 95 theses were ideas that demoralized the sell of indulgences and explained that it was ruining people’s faith. Luther posted his 95 theses on the door of the church and also sent a copy to the Archbishop ordering him to stop selling these indulgences. The printing press helped many copies of Luther’s 95 theses spread throughout Germany. The Pope told Luther to disavow his 95 theses. He refused, which caused the church to respond
