Martin Luther king was born on 15 January 1929 in Atlanta Georgia. He was the first son and second born, he was born to a very Christian family. His father was a minster. At a young age martin show the need for the social change King first came across discrimination, aged six, when he and a white friend were sent to different schools.
Aged 14, King was forced to give up his bus seat for a white passenger on a ride home from Georgia. He had just won a contest, with a speech about equal rights. This humiliating episode spurred him on to confront the injustice of segregation. Although America abolished slavery in 1865, there was widespread economic and social inequality – in 1940 life expectancy was 64 for whites and 53 for non-whites. Originally called the ‘Southern Negro Leaders Conference on Transportation and Non-violent Integration’, the organisation adopted the title Southern Christian Leadership Conference – by including the word ‘Christian’, it emphasised the spiritual nature of the organisation. SCLC use an ideals of non-violent resistance which was used by Gandhi while he was involved in South African Indians struggle for justice at the beginning of the 20th century. He believed that a spiritual transformation was necessary before political change be achieved so demonstrators must accept hardships in the process of resisting injustice.
Martin inspired many groups to join the civil rights movement. Many students were inspired by Martin and his method of using non-violent protesting. Students became involved in civil disobedience and formed the SNCC and CORE. Which used the same method of using non- violent protesting.
