Edgar Allen Poe captivated everyone with the short story The Tell-Tale Heart, which forced readers to questions one's mental state, deciding on whether someone is guilty or innocent, whether someone is conscious of their actions, or if they are sane or criminally insane. The Tell-Tale Heart is the perfect example of the argument of whether an individual is aware of their actions and the crimes they commit or if they are possessed and driven to commit crimes by something in their mind, in which they could possibly use an insanity plea during their trial if they are caught. The narrator, who Edgar Allen Poe portrays as insane, is not, and during this essay, I will outline examples as to why he is not and that he is fully aware of the crimes that he is committing. The first example as to his premeditation is how he is explaining the story to the audience.…

Sexuality and power are also main themes in "The Eyes" a story that “unites horror of male oppression and sadism with distaste for homosexuality” (Gardner Smith 97). In it, in addition, Wharton explores the fears created by one's conscience and guilt thanks to a presence that “resides in the evanescent realm of the fantastic as Todorovod defines it” (Garnder Smith 94). An anonymous narrator narrates a gathering of gentlemen in Andrew Culwin's house in which they all tell ghost stories. The host is the last one telling his story, a personal story of two ghosts he has seen, a story he tells to the narrator and his disciple Philip Frenham.…

Literary Techniques and the Horror of The Turn of the Screw One purpose of Henry James’ gothic novella The Turn of the Screw is to instill fear in the reader. There are several features of this work that make the story horror inducing; first, James’ deals with the idea of the corruption of innocence of children. In the story’s opening chapter, the observation is made that the corruption of a child in a ghost story “adds a particular touch” (James 115). Fear is also associated with the novella because it forges a personal connection with the reader by the use of the universal themes of death and the unknown.…
