Francesco disproved the theory of spontaneous generation through his controlled experiment with the maggots and the meat. Redi hypothesized that maggots did not magically appear from the meat, like the people at the time thought, but rather hatched from the objects deposited by the flies. He tested this by placing meat in two jars, one with no lid (the control group) and the other with a cloth cover (the experimental group). If spontaneous generation was valid, then both jars would’ve had maggots squirming about, however only one did: the one that was accessible to the flies.
