How Did Lincoln's Impact On The American Nation

Lincoln made a significant impact on the American Nation by his speeches and documents in at least two ways. First, he got the Union some support because of writing the Emancipation Proclamation. For example, after the Union victory at the Battle of Antietam, he wrote the Emancipation Proclamation which stated “As of January 1, 1863, all persons held as slaves within the states currently in rebellion shall be free.” (The Civil War-Section III) Although this document did not free any slaves, it made abolitionist and free blacks or escaped slaves in the North want to fight for the Union army and it cut off any alliance between the Confederacy and Britain and France. Second, he tried to unite the states by giving the Gettysburg Address which had honored the people that had died at Gettysburg. For example, after the Union victory at Gettysburg, he gave a speech that honored those who had died during the Civil War, the need for the states to unify as one, and the importance of human equality and self-government as set forth in the Declaration of Independence. First, he was the leader in preserving the Union. For example, he led the Union through a difficult time, the civil war. He did this by appointing George Meade as the last General for the Union during the Civil War, and because he was always trying to keep the Union together by writing the Emancipation Proclamation and delivering the Gettysburg Address.
