Lester B Pearson made a positive lasting impact on Canada when he changed the way Canadians fought wars by only entering wars in a peacekeeping role. Lester B pearson brought a peace keeping role to Canada by stopping a major war in the middle east (Black 67). The war was between France, Britain and Egypt versus the Soviets, over the Suez Canal (“Suez Crisis”). Egypt wanted Britain and France to leave or the Soviets would use nuclear action (“Suez Crisis”). Lester B Pearson requested that the British and French withdrawal and the united nations would send in a peacekeeping group to control the area until an agreement was made (“Suez Crisis”). Two years later an agreement was finally made and Lester looked to be a hero for stopping a possible world war. Lester B Pearson ended up winning the nobel peace prize (Yasuda, 22) for stopping a possible world war. What lester B Pearson did to show that you can bring peace is still used by Canadians today as a peacekeeping country. Medicare was a high quality health care for the people who could not afford health care, everyone got this service even if they could not afford to pay (Hughes,47). Pearson decided that Ottawa would pay 50% of all the health costs (Medicare). This left a positive lasting impact on Canada because the poor were able to take care of themselves. By doing this it changed Canada in a great way, the poor were able to live a better life because they did not have to go in debt if someone got sick. Our free health care is still used today in Canada. Pearson helped Canada in a great way when he decided to make a better education for the people who could not afford it (Hughes,47). Pearson helped underprivileged students to get an education, and make a better life for themselves. What Pearson did is so significant because it allowed kids to get an education and hopefully giving them the opportunity to earn a living as an adult. Finally Pearson changed Canada in a positive way by helping the Elderly people that are in retirement to afford to feed and live the rest of their lives independently (Hughes,47). Pearson created a pension plan for the elderly (Bothwell), so when you retire you get paid enough money to afford to live and feed yourself for the rest of their lives. By doing this the elderly can retire earlier and live a happier life. Pearson helped the elderly have homes and food and not to be homeless. Pearson changed Canada in a positive way by helping the underprivileged live better with health care, education, and old age assistance. These things are still in place today in Canada.
