Do you know how many languages are spoken in the world? More than 6500 languages are spoken by people. My country, South Korea, we speak Korean which is called “Hangul”. Hangul is the Korean own alphabet, and King Sejong the Great created it. Today, I am telling you King Sejong who is one of the most important figures in Korea history and Korean alphabet, Hangul.

First, I am explain King Sejong’s life shortly.
He was born 1397, Sejong succeeded to the throne at the age 22 as the fourth king of the Choson dynasty and lasted until 1450 when he was 54. His reign was a period of great cultural and intellectual accomplishment in Korea that is called the Golden Age.

Next, Why King Sejong created Hangul?

However, now only 14 consonants and 10 vowels, 24 letters total, are used. 14 consonants and 10 vowels make syllable block. The 5 basic consonants ㄱ, ㄴ, ㅁ, ㅅ, and ㅇ are symbolic which is pronounced physically in a person’s mouth. For example, “ㅁ”, /m/sound, is the shape of the open mouth. “ㅅ”, /s/, /sh/sound, is the shape of the teeth, and “o”, /ng/sound, is the figure of a throat. The most prominent characteristic of Hangul is the relationship between each individual letter and its sound. In English, the pronunciation and shape of each alphabet letter have nothing in common, so people must be memorized separately. However, all letters of Hangul are designed in such a way that similarly pronounced letters also look similar, as in ㄴ, ㄷ, and ㅌ. This highly scientific method is the reason why linguistic scholars around the world are amazed by Hangul. And The 3 basic vowels are thought to be the origins of the universe.
