How Did John And Elizabeth Proctor Get Confession In The Crucible

If you were given the option to confess, during the late 1600s, would you confess the truth in court? In the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, two characters stand out, John and Elizabeth Proctor. Both characters are different from the rest of the people during this time period because, everyone is suspicious of witchcraft. Many people falsely accuse others as witches; so that they stay alive, however, they leave the one that's accused dead. John and Elizabeth both tell the truth to the ones they confess to. By telling the truth Elizabeth helps John die with a better reputation and die with dignity. John cheats on his wife Elizabeth, with his worker, Abigail. He does feel guilty after he commits this sin and wants to feel better although it was very hard for him. The way he feels a little better, is by confessing his sin to Judge Danforth. At first when John is caught cheating, he thinks he will get away with it. He says while he is confessing to Danforth, “ A man may think God sleeps, but God sees everything, I know it now”. John realizes he is guilty and that God sees everything. This quote displays logos, John telling us that is logical that god is everywhere. He now believes that nobody should hide anything they do, because the higher power watches everything. John regrets fooling around with Abby and calls her a “whore” and a “lump of vanity”. This shows that Abby did not mean anything to him. John begs Danforth to leave his wife innocent. He said, “ I beg you sir, I beg you- see her what she is”. This shows that he really does care about her and doesn't want her to be guilty,especially because she does nothing wrong. Another time he begs he says “ forgive me, forgive me”. John really does want to be repented for his sins and he uses repetition strategies, to emphasize his want for
