During the creation of the Continental Army, he nominated George Washington to be the commander-in-chief during the war. During May ofo 1776, the Congress passed Adam’s resolution stating that each colony should have their own independent government, leading to the creation of the Declaration of Independence just a few months later. He was a very prominent proponent of American independence during the early stages of the Revolutionary War, but very few took him seriously as they considered him ‘obnoxious,’ and he was generally disliked by other members of the Continental Congress. Eventually, Richard Henry Lee of Virginia nominated the issue of independence, which Adams seconded on June 7, 1776. During the debate, the issue was postponed to draft a formal declaration to make all arrangements final, as the decision must have been unanimous. John Hancock assigned John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Richard Livingston, and Roger Sherman would be tasked with creating the Declaration of Independence.
