“The Jacket” Fictional Narrative Assessment Gary Soto’s “The Jacket” tells the story of a jacket that the author received when he was in 6th grade. The jacket his mother lovingly purchased for him was NOT the kind of jacket he had asked for, and in his eyes, brought him three years of bad luck. Rewrite Soto’s personal narrative as if his mother HAD bought him the neat jacket - “like bikers wear: black leather and silver studs with enougt belts to hold down a small town.” Tell your version from the day the author sees the jacket on his bedpost, to the end of day when he first wore the new jacket to school. When looking back at history, it is easy to blindly focus only on the distinguished individuals and most memorable events. Though these have a great amount of importance and remain influential on our lives today, it is both valuable and insightful to consider the general population and their alluring lives. Additionally, the fact that these individuals are not featured in history textbooks or taught to students as a part of a common curriculum does not make their stories any less excellent, but could potentially provide for a new outlook on our past. In 1934, as America was in the midst of The Great Depression and countless citizens were struggling to find their way through the country’s economic downfall, Ruth Green was born in in Burlingame, California.…

Seventh grade, my second year now at what I thought to be the worst school in the world. On back to school night I met a man who would change my perspective on life completely, that man being Brandon Lilly. Henry Adams once said “A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.” At a mere five-foot four he appeared to be a kid minus the burly lumberjack beard that he possessed. I remember being skeptical at first because I had never had a male teacher before.…

Starting first grade I thought we were the top dogs because we got moved down to the bigger playground with the bigger kids. Since they knew we liked kick ball so much they built a kick ball diamond for us. There was just so much to do in the shortest amount of time. Everyday was a new day, I never did the same thing, whether it was playing on the upper part on the monkey bars seeing who could hang the longest or playing football with the guys. I can remember my first year at kickball I was taller than most of the guys because they haven’t hit their growth spurt yet, so everyone wanted me on their team because I was the only girl once again that was better than most of the guys.…
