Of all the world's major five religions, Islam is a fascinating religion, I have ever learned about. According to the holy texts of Muslims, in 610 CE a local merchant named Muhammad retreated to a cave on the outskirts of the city of Mecca in Arabia to meditate. In that cave, he meditated where the archangel Gabriel appeared and gave Muhammad words to recite. Breathtaking words from Gabriel told him to create a religion called Islam. In about 140 years, Muhammad created an empire that spread in the Middle East all the way to North Africa and Europe. A question that came up while learning about Islam was, why did Islam spread so quickly? My thesis is that there were three reasons, trade, messages, and conquest. In the year 636, the Byzantine Emperor Heraclius had a cohesion of a large army about 200,000 of them to face off against the 24,000 Moslems. The Moslems heard that the Byzantine Empire was on there way to fight them at al-Yarmuk. This made the Moslems nervous and to the city of Hims. The Moslems told the people of Hims (according to The Origins of the Islamic State), “We are too busy to support and protect you. Take care of yourselves.” But the people of the Hims said, “We like your rule and justice far better than the state of oppression and tyranny in which we were. The army of Heraclius we shall indeed...repulse from the city.” With Allah's help, the “unbelievers” were defeated and the Moslems won.
