In the 7th century C.E., the followers of a new religion, Islam which literally means submission the self-surrender of the believer to the will of the one, true God, Allah.

2. How did religion/philosophy spread?

Islam spread from the Arabian Peninsula and began a sequence of conquest and conversion that would forge the first truly global civilization. In succeeding centuries Islamic civilization was spread by merchants, wandering mystics, and warriors across Africa, Asia, and Southern Europe. It spread throughout the steppes of central Asia, including most of what is known today as Southern Russia, to western China and into south Asia. Muhammad is known as rasul Allah, or God's Messenger to the Arabs, and to all of humanity. He was born in Mecca ca. 570 C.E., and died in Medina in 632. Most of what we know about Prophet Muhammad comes from the Quran, but we also have life stories written in the century after his death called the sirah and the hadith. Some general histories modern with the sirah are also useful sources of information about Muhammad's life.

The word "Quran" means recitation because the Quran was first heard in religious speeches and public readings. Muslims believe it is still best communicated by being said. The Quran has been translated into many languages, but only the Arabic version is believed.
