How Did Islam Influence European Culture

Although most people would assume that since Christianity is a very popular and well supported religion that they would have a greater impacting role on the forms of art produced during the crusades. However, despite Christianity’s current popularity, Islamic beliefs had greater influence the arts during the crusades. When Islam made contact with Europe, they influenced numerous aspects of the European culture especially a few types of art. Some of the gifts the Muslims brought were new instruments, Islamic art, and poetry. The period of contact between Islam and Europe was a vital effect of the crusades setting separate technological advances in place. The woven textiles (clothes) were influenced by the Muslim community and tended to have Islamic images or symbols on them. Leaders of churches wore similar clothes with Muslim influenced images as well! The use of the images on the European clothes gave linked Islam with the higher statured people. Islamic woven silk textiles were proven to have great respect when Christians used theses silks to dress the relics of saints. The paintings that did survive the crusades were mostly Islamic art created by an artist of a different religion. Scribes of Illuminated Manuscripts often depicted images of men and women only as Islamic rulers, some contained Calligraphy, or pen drawn illustrations, which mainly appeared in secular Arabic which is part of the Muslim religion. The weight of Islamic impacts on the forms of visual art, produced during the crusades, was tremendous. The amount of art influenced by Islam much more than that of Christianity
