In the the 1400’ to the 1500’, people started to think about society, government, religion, science, art, philosophy, and trade in a secular way. This new way of thinking was called humanism and it revolved around the individual. Martin Luther was one of the first to think that an individual can understand human nature and the world through reason. The Renaissance in Western Europe is the period of time where thoughts were humanistic and began conflicting with the church.
Thesis:
In Western Europe in the 1400’ to the 1500’ humanism transformed the way of thinking by influencing 1) a secular focus on art, 2) how you could get to heaven without the church, and 3) scientific understanding.

During the Renaissance, art shifted from being 2D and simplistic to being 3D and using perspective. Humanistic art began reflecting reality and realism instead of glorification. Artist started painting things like Michelangelo's 'The Creation of Adam' with emotion, light, and movement. Luther questioned the authority of the church and nailed his objections to the church on the doors of the church. Also Martin Luther argued that Christians could get to Heaven by faith alone. Meaning you didn't need a church, priests, sacraments, relics, or pilgrimages.

Scientific understanding changed during the Renaissance with Sir Francis Bacon and Humanism. Bacon thought that a hypothesis could only be valid after scientific experimentation. This was named the scientific method and it was applied to technical areas and broadened our understanding. The scientific method influenced inventions like the Gutenberg Printing Press which allowed Humanistic ideas to spread
