Some women died of the injection and some were killed for an autopsy to discover if the procedure worked. Caladium seguinum was used orally and injected because Dr. Madaus had said it would bring about sterilization.5 A document was sent to Himmler from Viktor Brack about x-ray sterilization. It stated the x-ray dosages would destroy the inner secretions of the ovaries and testicles. The dosages had to be so high that castration occurred and lesser dosages would be temporary. Brack said in the document the symptoms would be the cessation of menstruation, menopause, changes in body hair, and changes in metabolism.6 He informed Himmler the men needed a dosage of 500-600 r for two minutes and women needed 300-350 r for three minutes.7 This amount of x-rays is a median lethal dose for x-rays absorbed in the human body. Surgical operations were experimented with to see if sexually abnormal prisoners at Buchenwald would have virility increased by transplantation of glands.8 Opposition to this forced sterilization was almost non-existent. These tests were designed to test the human endurance and existence at high altitudes without oxygen. These tests were an endeavor to duplicate the conditions a German pilot could encounter when falling through space without a parachute or oxygen. Four different tests made up this experiment. The first test was a slow descent without oxygen, this was to simulate descent with the parachute open; the second test was a slow descent with oxygen, this was to simulate a descent with an open parachute; the third test was falling without oxygen, simulating a free fall before the chute opened; and the last was falling with oxygen, this was a free fall with the chute still undeployed.
