Henry was born in Dearborn, Michigan on July 30, 1863. He was the child of William Ford and Mary Litogot. He was the first of five children to live to adulthood. He started from a relatively poor background. However, even from the beginning, he showed an interest in mechanics. Unfortunately, Ford’s mother, Mary Litogot, died due to childbirth related incidents. Ford was thirteen at the time. After this, he left school in sixth grade and got a job. In the Industrialist Age, many job skills were better obtained through experience than education. It was for this reason that he chose to quit school. The job that Henry got was at a machine workshop in Detroit. Six days later, he was promptly fired from that job and returned to the farm on which he was raised. Together, they had a son, named Edsel. Five weeks after, they moved to a house in Detroit that was closer to Ford’s work. It was there that he met Thomas Edison. The two become great friends, and Edison encourages Ford to pursue a career in the automotive industry. Soon after that, Ford started his own company, the Henry Ford Company. Just two years after, the Model N becomes America’s best-selling car. The car was lightweight, inexpensive, and embodied concepts that Ford continued to develop throughout his career. Although the Model N was a huge hit, Ford thought that he could make it better by making it more durable and more affordable. In this way, it would also appeal to the lower classes.
