• In 1776, when the British captured New York,, many patriots ran, but Saloman did not and got arrested by the British. However they thought he would help them, and released him. Saloman used this to release other prisoners. Saloman had donated 600,00 dollars to the new government, which was never repaid.
Americans Divided:
• The decision to be independent separated many opinions. Around 20%-30% supported the British, while 40%-45% were Patriots, and the rest were neutral. Many colonists didn’t support the Revolution. Ben Franklin’s son joined the Loyalists.

Burgoyne threw celebrations after victories, and he did so after Ticonderoga. This gave time to the Americans to disable the routes and supplies of the British. The last 25 miles to Albany were tough for the Brits, and it took four weeks to build roads and bridges to get over swamp land.
• On Aug, 4, Howe wrote to Burgoyne that he wasn’t coming to Albany, but instead to Pennsylvania to try and capture G. Washington. Howe did defeat Washington, but he did not capture him. In October, Washington attacked Howe in Germantown, but lost and retreated.
Battles Along the Mohawk:
• St Leger also was having issues reaching Albany. He was trying to defeat a small American force at Fort Stanwix.
• During August 177, American general Benedict Arnold wanted to chase the British away, so he sent a captured Loyalist and a few American allied Iroquois to spread a rumor that he had a huge army perepared to attack.
• St. Leger’s army retreated very fast in fear they would be outnumbered after hearing this rumor, and they left behind many supplies. No one was left to meet Burgoyne in Albany.
