Harry Gold was a laboratory chemist who was born in Bern, Switzerland on December 11, 1910. He moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1914. When the war began he was a twenty-eight year old who lived with his parents and his older brother. They lived in a working class Pennsylvania neighborhood. Because of the great depression he was laid off from his job at the sugar chemical plant. He was offered another job that had very high pay which helped him support his family.
