Tubman was born a slave in Bucktown, Maryland. In 1844, she married John Tubman, a freed slave. In 1849, she escaped from slavery. Soon she returned to Maryland to help other slaves escape. Tubman was never caught, and she never lost a slave in her 19 rescue trips.
During the American Civil War, Tubman served as a nurse, scout, and spy for the Union Army. During one part of the war, she helped free more than 750 slaves.
