How Did Greeks Make Athenian Democracy

Athens made the democracy. Democracy was made in 510 BC. The greeks named it democracy because democracy means “government by people”.Citizens had a say in the government. The Athenian democracy was divided into 3 branches. The Assembly or the Ekklesia is the first branch. This branch was made up of all the citizens who voted. This assembly would meet every ten days. Laws and important decisions were made by this group.
The next branch is the Council. This council was made up of 500 citizens. It could also be called the Boule.The council dealt with everyday government. They met almost every day, excluding festival days. Once someone had served on the council, they couldn’t serve again. The spots in this group were given out for one …show more content…
They had two kings from different families of hereditary monarchs. They were moderated by each other and the other branches of government. Only one of the kings was in charge of the army. The king who was in charge was picked by the people. This two king system helped keep Sparta out of many wars.
The next branch is the Gerousia. They are also known as the Gerontes or the council of elders. The council was made up of 28 men who were over the age of 60. They held this position for the rest of their lives. They were elected by the people. They were the court of criminal justice, and were the advising body. The elders collaborated with the Ephors (the next branch). They had power over the actions of the …show more content…
This branch is made up of five members. This branch was apparently really powerful. The people in the council were elected every year. Any spartan could become an Ephor hypothetically. The Ephors took office on the first day of the year on the Spartan calendar. Ephors had the ability to impeach a king. They could only do it one at a time, and the king who was impeached was tried in front of the elders, the Ephors, and the other king. If the king was impeached, they were either dethroned or fined. The Ephors were “the supreme court”.Unlike the Athenians, the Spartan “supreme court” was made up of 5 people Two out of the five Ephors would always go with kings on campaigns. They went with the king to assure the importance of the state. Ephors could have existed since 757 BC, but people say they came about in 724 BC to govern while the king was away winning
