How Did Gilgamesh Become A Good Leader

Although the gaps and missing words were extremely frustrating to read around, I enjoyed going on adventures with Gilgamesh. Some tablets were easier to understand than others, but I appreciated the brief translations provided every few lines.

Gilgamesh failed to meet my criteria for what makes a good leader. Prior to Enkidu’s arrival, he treated the people of Uruk poorly. One of the most important qualities in a leader is the ability to bring people together, but that’s pretty hard when they don’t respect you. Women were especially treated poorly. On each wedding night, Gilgamesh felt he deserved to deflower each new wife prior to their new husbands getting the chance. Once the people of Uruk finally had enough, they prayed to the gods to create a rival for Gilgamesh

Once Enkidu was introduced, Gilgamesh’s attitude changed. Although their first encounter wasn’t a pleasant one, Enkidu and Gilgamesh put their differences aside and became great friends. Now that Gilgamesh had a friend, his priorities changed. He wanted to do good by his people for the first time in a long time. Prior to them meeting each other, we get a glance of what their priorities are like. On page 13 in the first translation of tablet II, the narrator explains that both Gilgamesh and Enkidu stayed up all night but for different reasons, “..Gilgamesh keeps his subjects awake at night with his roistering, Enkidu stays up all night to protect the flocks”. Once they become friends, Gilgamesh finally has a positive influence in his life and starts to change the way he is. I feel that because they were so similar in stature but polar opposite in attitude, Gilgamesh may have found it easier to be the big tough nice guy like Enkidu, instead of the town monster like he had been in the past. Through their adventures, their relationship grows and they are constantly reassuring and encouraging each other to be heroic and brave. Once Enkidu

During the tale of the ancient Mesopotamian epic, Gilgamesh himself experiences conflict both physically and emotionally, illuminating lessons that to this day still are applicable and apparent. Gilgamesh is a king who is described by his people as a tyrant. Although given wisdom, beauty, and courage he is described as “incredibly arrogant,” and possessed “no respect” (Rosenberg, 175). Additionally, he “did whatever he wished even when it hurt others” (Rosenberg, 176). To combat his vanity and egotism, Anu father of the gods, asked the mother goddesses, to create and equally strong and courageous man to fight Gilgamesh.…

Gilgamesh’s relationship with Enkidu was much like any other friendship. From the beginning, it was very evident that Gilgamesh would receive a friend in which he would be able to confide in. It was discussed that Gilgamesh was very different from the rest of his people. He was capable of many things and he knew many secret things as well. It was stated that Gilgamesh did not have anyone who supported him; he was alone until the gods lamented and a goddess created Enkidu to be a friend for Gilgamesh.…

At a glance, one may assume that The Epic of Gilgamesh and I and Thou have no relation to each other. This can be believed when the plots of the epic and book, respectively, are taken into account. The Epic of Gilgamesh is an epic poem written by ancient, anonymous authors that tells the story of Gilgamesh, the King of Uruk, and how he gradually becomes a noble king through a series of events, with his best friend Enkidu by his side. I and Thou is a book written by Martin Buber in 1923. This book is about how humans find meaningfulness for their lives through relationships with objects and with others.…

This meeting identifies them as equals on a spiritual level. In his lecture on the text, Professor Rubey identified that the loss of a friend is so profound because a friend is another version of oneself; to see a friend die is to see the death of half of one’s own being. In this respect, Gilgamesh and Enkidu are equals beyond the shadow of a doubt. The narrator himself identifies that, “It is the story of their becoming human together” (Gilgamesh/ Mason, p.15). They complete each other.…

Throughout the journey Gilgamesh embarks upon, he gradually changes by the characters he meets along the way. Gilgamesh is confronted with new emotions such as love, compassion, and belonging from Enkidu. They create a bond with their differences which enhanced their friendship because the qualities that Enkidu lacked, Gilgamesh is able to reinforce and vice versa for Gilgamesh. “He turned to Enkidu, who leaned against his shoulder and looked into his eyes and saw himself in the others, just as Enkidu saw himself in Gilgamesh” (Mason 24). This quote shows their first encounter with each other.…

This shows that the hero of the epic is not the perfect, fearless, lone warrior who is able to overcome any foe; in fact, Gilgamesh requires the help of his companion Enkidu in order to complete his quest. The evil value of fear controls the hero, and prevents him from achieving victory over the forces that stand in his way. Had it not been for Enkidu, Gilgamesh may not have been able to complete his journey. When Enkidu is killed, however, Gilgamesh finds himself alone, in the wilderness, on a journey that seems impossible. He is afraid of the lions which stalk the mountains, yet he is able to push forward .…

Gilgamesh: A Story of Motivation Through Friendship In the story “Gilgamesh”, multiple scribes describe a tale in Uruk of how an arrogant king changes after experiencing moments of great proportion through friendship. Gilgamesh, a young demigod king, is abusing his right of power throughout his kingdom and is displeasing not only the citizens, but the gods as well. To tame Gilgamesh, the gods create companion Enkidu as a form of checks and balances, as he is equal in body and mind. Gilgamesh becomes even more prideful through their adventures, until his reality falls apart once the gods kill Enkidu as punishment for disrespect.…

The overbearing gods and goddesses in the story create Enkidu to counteract his manipulation. Gilgamesh and Enkidu end up becoming best friends and going on many (unnecessary, but) epic journeys and quests together. Even though the book was written 5,000 years ago, it follows a template that many other action books follow, called the Hero’s Journey. This template provides an arc to the book that starts with the departure of the hero, reaches the climax with initiation and ends with the return of the hero, who have mastered themselves and the worlds around them by the end of the book. The epic of Gilgamesh follows the Hero’s journey, but even though the book…
