How Did Germany Build The Berlin Wall

After World War II Germany was separated between four powers: France, America, Britain, and Russia. Germany was then split up into two sides, East and West. France, America, and Britain controlled the west while Russia controlled the east. Berlin was the capital of Germany. Berlin, although in the east, was split as well so that Russia wasn’t the only one controlling the capital. Because of this, the East Germany constructed the Berlin Wall. While many people tried to escape across the Berlin Wall from East Berlin over to the West, the wall was successful at keeping many people from making it across alive. Before the Berlin Wall was put up, it was easy for people to flee across the border of East and West Berlin. It was erected on April 13th, 1961. To rationalize the Berlin Wall to East German citizens, the Soviet press said that it was to protect the German Democratic Republic from West German spies. This was simply an excuse that, while plausible, was still a lie. Even though it was to stop the East Germans from crossing to West Berlin, people still tried to. When the Berlin Wall was first put up the GDR cut all telephone lines between the East and West as well as blocking all transportation between the two sides. This made people who worked on the East side of Berlin but lived on the West unable to go home. An example of this is one couple who, a little while after the wall was constructed, had to wave to their family on the other side after getting married.
