How Did George Washington Gain Independence

George Washington George Washington and the American colonists were collapsing under the excessive taxation being inflicted on them by the British. After experiencing the effects of the rising taxes, George Washington realized that it would be in everyone’s favor to declare independence from Britain. George Washington was against the rising taxes that the British were imposing on the American colonists, and because of that belief he was for American Independence because gaining independence from Britain would remove all of the taxes that the British were putting on the American colonists. George Washington was born to a rich plantation owner in Virginia in the year 1732. He became an apprentice to a surveyor of land in Virginia. While surveying the land, he developed a deep love and appreciation for nature. In December 1752, Washington was made commander of the Virginia militia, and at the time he had had no military experience. As commander, he fought in the French and Indian war. When he witnessed the toll that the British taxes were taking on the American colonists, he realized that it would be beneficial for all American citizens if America was to declare independence from Britain. George Washington was appointed commander in chief of the continental army during the revolutionary war. He led the American forces to victory against the British. Washington disagreed with the British belief of “Taxation without representation,” and he believed that it was the government trying too hard to control the economic life of the colonists. He realized that independence would free them of British control and the taxes that the British were trying to force on them. He was also against the idea of a king as a ruler. At one point he was offered the title of king, but he refused because he wanted the United States to be a
