George W. Jenkins, the founder of Publix Super Markets, was born September 29, 1907 in Warms Springs, Georgia. George’s family had owned a general store in his town, catering to farmers. In 1920, cotton fields are destroyed due to beetles feeding on the cotton buds. This forced the Jenkins’s to move the family business to Atlanta. George stayed behind to finish high school, and in 1924 he moved to Georgia and enrolled at Georgia Tech. George tried a series of jobs but never sticked with him. However, George had hopes of making his fortune in the real estate business.
George began working as a stork clerk for the Piggly Wiggly and became the temporary store manager.
