Some people work extremely hard, only to receive grief, but others also work and receive rewards and much success. ADD ANOTHER SENTENCE These are the lives two characters trying to survive in the harsh realities of life. In The Circuit by Francisco Jiménez, Francisco an illegal Mexican immigrant tries to survive in the hard camp life in California. In Farewell to Manzanar by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston, Jeanne and her family try to live in the Japanese camps in California during WWII. Francisco and Jeanne both show resilience and courage. Both fight to survive in difficult circumstances, similarly they are outcasts along with the people their age but Jeanne finds success in school, while Francisco is deported to Mexico.

Francisco always stays and helps around the family, even when they go through problems, he also has his own problems. Francisco is very resilient; he is under so much pressure and he loses so much yet he doesn’t give up. During Francisco’s life in California his house burns down, along with his notebook, the most important thing he owned at the time. After weeping over the lost of his book, he soon realizes that everything in the book is memorized is his mind and that he can actually live without it. Francisco, knowing the hardships coming in the future, knew that he must endure it. “Yes, it was that time of the year when I opened the front door to the shack, I stopped. Everything we owned was neatly packed in cardboard boxes. Suddenly I felt even more the weight of hours, days, weeks and months of work.
