One way Poe’s life impacted his writing was his unstable family. He dealt with the loss of his mother, and his wife Virginia. He also lost his brother. Poe’s wife, mother, and brother all died of Tuberculosis. Poe wrote about his mother’s death in the poem Alone. His alcoholism is shown in the short stories: The Black Cat and The Cask of Amontillado. The Black Cat tells how the narrator becomes an alcoholic and abuses his cat and wife. The Cask Of Amontillado tells about the narrator tricking the other character to get revenge. The overall story symbolises his alcoholism.

Poe struggled with poverty throughout his entire life. He had lots of debt and was always in search of money. When he was in debt his foster father would not help him financially. This strained their relationship even more. The poem Poe wrote that symbolized poverty was called Eldorado. Eldorado was a poem about a man who yearned for money his whole life and died searching for
