Byzantine architecture originally diverges from early Christian architecture during the reign of the Emperor Justinian, around the middle of the sixth century.
The size and shape of the churches and style of decorations in Rome was similar to the new buildings built by the Byzantium, Because of this the Byzantine architecture had a lot in common with early Christian architecture, as most early Christian buildings were built at the command of the Byzantine Emperor Constantine. Through this the Byzantines managed to create a new style and form for their own. This style persisted in Eastern Europe for another thousand years, while Western Europe developed new, Western styles of architecture.
The Byzantines have developed many systems and techniques in order to give their style a unique finish unlike the other ancient styles, to do this various methods were invented, for instance, the domes, square plans, rounded arches, spikes, mosaics and columns. The Basilica di San Marco built in 828, its known for its luxurious design with its gold-plated interior originally mosaics, after the 11th century it was known as the "Church of Gold" “Chiesa d'Oro”, It was built in such way to symbolize the republic's growing power and wealth This building stands out with its unique design, it’s a mixture of eastern and western architecture styles resulting in a distinctive architecture for Venice.
