How Did Dennis Blagg Painted Passover Red

Normally, a painted desert scene and a horse sculpture don’t have very many things in common, if at all. In Passover, Dennis Blagg has created a stunning and realistic painting. In contrast, Hina, sculpted by Deborah Butterfield is an extraordinary sculpture of a resting horse. While the pieces are different art forms, they both convey the beauty of organic forms in nature. Dennis Blagg is an extremely talented artist in the Southwest area, particularly the Big Bend National Park region of West Texas. In 1997, Blagg painted Passover, a beautiful representational desert scene with enormous mountains in the background. In the left hand side of the painting there is a dramatic difference in colors. In the upper corner, the cloudless sky is a cool blue. About half way down, there is a rigid mountain arising out of the rocky desert ground which appears as a neutral, sandy brown. As the viewer’s eyes move below the mountain they will notice some healthy vegetation seemingly out of place with the surrounding rocks and dirt. Now shift to the upper middle of the painting. The sky has noticeably gotten a lighter shade of blue. The focal point is the rugged mountain. As the mountain is forming …show more content…
This type of style is known as realism. It takes many, many years for an artist to master this technique. A famous example of realism is Leonard Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. Now looking and examining Hina, someone would determine that she falls under the expressionism category. That’s because Butterfield has stated “I first used the horse images as a metaphorical substitute for myself–it was a way of doing a self-portrait.”(MMoCA) Expressionism is where the artist wants to express their emotional experience rather than impressions of the external world. This can be very therapeutic for artists and non-artists alike. A famous example of expressionism is Edvard Munch’s The

The loose painterly brushwork, and Hals lively style of painting flagellates the lethargic flesh of the sitters and restores life as the magic of the brushwork seems to throw their faces out of a swoon-like slumber. Moreover, the portrait conveys a stern narrow-minded, and calm sensibility. As the women look out from the painting only two of them meet the spectator’s gaze with expressions that range from unfriendly, indifferent, and kindly concern. However, the gloomy, and virtually unicolor palette scattered by the white accents of the clothing’s underwrites to the painting’s…

Andrew Wyeth’s most famous piece of art, Christina’s World, is renowned as being one of the most famous of American portraits for its realistic depiction of a classic New England setting and a steadfast mysterious female with a deep background. Along with Wyeth’s rise to prominence, Christina’s World was his introduction into the “evolution of his own private language of metaphor.” As positioned in the painting, Christina lays where the painter first recognized her steadfast ambition, explaining, that she "was limited physically but by no means spiritually. " Art historians vary among their opinions on what type of art movement is present in the piece, some refer the painting as being magical realism with its attention to detail, while others…

The Haremhab as a Scribe of the King is from Dynasty 18, which is correlated with the reign of Tutankhamun or Ay. The place of its origin is probably from Memphis, which dates back to 1336-1323 B.C. It is an interesting sculpture considering the medium is gray granite. Size, color and the material surface texture shows the symbols and artistry appreciated by the Egyptians. As a result of time, the gray granite blends with beige that exhibits the old age of the artwork.…

This sculpture represents a man caring a calf and is part of the Archaic Greek period. The condition of the statue is poor, as pieces appear broken or missing, such as the legs, hands, and chin. It is identifiable as an Archaic Greek statue by its date (560 BCE), it’s style and composition.…

In There, there, Anna Youngyeun masterfully employs the use of balance, texture, and contrast to create an interesting paradox: a sculpture that, at first glance, appears to emanate an atmosphere of dread, but, upon further inspection, exudes comfort and understanding. The sculpture, created in 2014 and featured in Youngyeun’s I feel funny, but I like it, consists of a fiber-filled, humanesque form made of muslin over a wooden armature. The form is surrounded by several smaller screenprinted pillows made of rayon and cotton. Due to its massive size, ingenious demonstration of the visual elements and principles, and interesting aura, the piece dominates the Cube in Truman State University’s gallery.…

The work I chose is from The Amazing Spider-Man Essentials volume 5. Using the McCloud's textbook, the style here is comparable to that in the range of numbers 60-62. The characters drawn appear to be more towards the realistic side of the triangle rather than iconic or cartoonish. I believe the artist used this style because they have the ability to make meaningful facial expressions while also being able to slightly exaggerate them as it isn't meant to be hyper-realistic. This can be seen at the bottom of the image attached, where the bad guy gets more intense so that the muscles in between his eyes tense up and his eyes begin to bulge; but the drawing still remains an image of a face with realistic qualities.…

In art class there were many concepts about the different techniques and designs in order to make a piece of artwork. With the creation of various unique art compositions one can tell the brushes or movement that the artist took upon his or her artwork. Throughout the museum field trip, there were two paintings that were intriguing that caught my attention. The first painting called “Cypresses” by Vincent van Gogh is an oil canvas that was created on 1889. Many artists paint very vivid images, some are so crazy that you wonder how that artist came up with that idea? I like to think that not all painters paint for the same reason, some paint for the money, some for the challenge, some to express their emotion. I 'd like to take a look at a Bronze Sculpture called the Cowboy by Buck McCain. I was able to go and see this sculpture in person a couple of years ago in Jackson Hole Wyoming and it was one of my favorites.
