Delaware had a very interesting history that helped shape how the United States runs today. The colony received its name from the Delaware river. The Delaware river is named after Sir Thomas West, the Virginia Company’s first governor. Delaware’s first settlement was in 1631, by Dutch traders. Their leader was Captain David Pietersen de Vries. In 1632 the party was completely killed in a dispute with local natives. Peter Minuet lead the Swedish to Delaware in 1638. In 1655 the Dutch regained the land from the Swedish. The first settlers of Delaware got into a “foolish” fight with the Native American Tribes and every Dutch human was killed. “When De Vries(the Dutch leader) came the following year to visit his colony, he found nothing but heaps of ashes and charred bones.” After the Dutch left, William Penn was granted the land. William Penn decided he wanted to deal with the Native Americans as such and even dictated a regulation of trade which set up a type of protection for the Indians. Besides his regulation on trade William Penn also established a policy which extended equal rights and privileges under English law to the tribes in the area. After Penn died, tensions grew high, and England tried to buy the Native Americans
