Democracy
The Greeks were the first to study the various forms of human government and to identify the strengths and weakness of each. The idea of representative government began to take place in Greek city-states. The word democracy came from the Greek words, ‘demos’ and ‘kratein’ which when translated means ‘people to rule’. This form of government enabled the citizens to meet monthly and discuss state affairs at the Assembly. There were no decisions made by government without first asking the Assembly. After the fall of the city-states, the Romans used this form of government to run the affairs of the State.

Socrates, Plato and Aristotle are the three greatest philosophers of that age. The deep examination of self, our world and the formulation of ideas that probe, question and theorize about these things were a creation of these famous Greek philosophers. For instance, Socrates was known for his non-traditional teaching methods and his use of questioning to help reveal the underlying assumptions of his students. And Plato’s student, Aristotle write about politics, literature and the natural world which has continued to influence future thinkers and scientists. They believed in the balance of mind and body.
