In 1492, Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue. Columbus was on a mission to find a trade route from Spain to the East-Indies. In this event that changed the world forever, Christopher Columbus failed his mission. He instead landed on an island in the Bahamas, leading to the European discovery of the Americas. However, the technology of the time that Christopher Columbus used, was not as advanced as the technology used during current times. Some of the technology that has changed over time are navigational systems, mapping systems, and sailing systems. The maps that were used during this time were quite accurate for the amount information early Europeans had. With only the knowledge of Europe, Asia, and Africa, early map makers were quite accurate in surveying and mapping these regions. Using these maps, made from early map makers, Christopher Columbus sailed the Atlantic ocean to find a route to Asia. The technological advances of today include satellite imagery. With the use of satellite imagery, we can discover new places without ever having to travel. Satellite imagery would have allowed Christopher Columbus to discover the Americas without even leaving his house. There is another use for this technological advancement. Using satellite imagery can also make mapping out a voyage much easier. Sailors use satellite imagery to detect where they are and how far they are from their destination.They use this to also save time by creating routes that are time efficient. Using this technology explorers, like Christopher Columbus, could make their voyages much safer and be able to plan out a time saving route.
