This case is about a defendant who not only wanted power and money but who would do anything to get it even if it was to massacre thousands of people. He mistreated many native people, he encouraged slavery and he brought diseases over to the New World.

He said, “They were very well built, with very handsome bodies and very good faces. They do not carry arms or know them… they would be good servants.” The natives were then forced into slavery. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella had ordered Columbus to treat the Taino kindly. Columbus didn’t follow this order and began exporting slaves in great numbers in 1494. He wasn’t following orders because he wasn’t making enough of a profit for Ferdinand and Isabella's continued support. On Columbus’s ships, almost a third of the Taino don’t make it to Spain. When a Taino person would die one of the sailors would tossed the Taino bodies into the Atlantic Ocean. The Taino people that were not being sent to Spain were put into slavery on the island. Every man above the age of 14 had to provide the Spanish with a bowl filled with gold every 3 months. If they weren’t able to do that he would beat them, cut their hands and let them bleed to death. He killed so many people that the Taino population went from 8 million to 60 thousand in 10 years. They were once a proud and strong society but when Columbus came they became helpless and
