How Did Canadian Magazines Protect American Culture

The Canadian’s claimed that there motivation was to protect their Canadian culture I personally feel that it was not I feel it was economically motivated. Canadians placed taxes on magazines in 1920 on foreign magazines, then with technology came split run editions that they again added more tax. They placed policies on split run magazines 80 percent of magazine needed to be Canadian based content. This tax in my opinion was not based on keeping their culture it was motivation to charge a fee or tax, to profit from since sales were down on their local magazines. The Canadian culture has integrated some of the American culture just like America has integrated some of Canada’s culture through movies, books, maple syrup, and Canadian bacon.. In my opinion the Canadian government was pressured by the Canadian magazine industry since there magazines were 11 percent of the market and the U.S was majority of the foreign magazines profit. My question is why were there magazines not profitable? What exactly do the people in your country enjoy? What kind of articles do they like to read? And why specifically do they like U.S magazines? I feel the Canadian magazines should have done research to validate the interest of the people and the culture. The U.S did take advantage of the Canadian market by the split …show more content…
If I were in the Canadian government any foreign magazine regardless of material that is not produced within the Canadian borders should pay a yearly fee of 10 percent off the proceeds made off magazines for distribution and production of people to read the material. The magazine industry is a business why do they not produce and market their magazines to the U.S there are many Canadians that live in America and around the world that would like to purchase the Canadian culture
