Americas Piano Man: Billy Joel Many musicians in the world are extremely talented, but Billy Joel is one of a kind. Joel has inspired people for forty years. He has managed to live on his legendary music career for just about 47 years. Joel, born on May 9, 1949, in the Bronx. He displayed an early aptitude on the piano and started taking lessons at the age of four. At the age of sixteen, Joel was already a veteran of three bands. In 1967, Joel joined a band known as the Hassles. The Hassles were a popular group in Long Island that played soul with a little bit of surreal in their music. Although Joel inspires many musicians, some of his influences include Beethoven, the Beatles, Dave Brubeck, George Gershwin, Phil Spector, Ray Charles and Fats Domino.¨ Joel told the Kostka that his goal is to make music that “meant something during the time in which I lived...and transcended that time.” Joel was clearly successful of his goal. He managed to accomplish that, and so much more than he expected. When looking at the top music charts, you'll see that he has managed to constantly be on the charts. He has been able to get any type of song on the charts including jazz, pop, and soul music, Joel has applied his skills in a diversity of genres and instruments. With all of his amazing records and number one hit songs, it makes him one of the most well-known names in American history. Most would say Joel has changed the music industry for the better as he introduced a new kind of genre to the music industry. He is also still performing this day, at 68 years old. Joel has six Grammys and 33 Top 40 hits. He has sold more than 150 million records, been inducted into 3 different halls of fame and been awarded honorary doctorates from six different universities.
