Americans facing unemployment and new taxes in the early 1990s definitely caused George H. W. Bush to lose his bid to be re-elected in the 1992 election. Many U.S. citizens felt betrayed after Bush agreed to a tax increase despite his promise: “read my lips, no new taxes!” This hurt him a great deal. Not only that, but Bush, a very rich man, seemed very unrelatable toward the American people. He was glaringly out of touch because he had been government for decades, losing touch with day to day life in America (It’s known that Bush was amazed by a checkout-line scanner, a gadget already familiar to most at the time).
