Sewing the Stars and Stripes We have seen many things made for the first time, but by far the most iconic may be the first official sewn flag of the United States. Betsy Ross was the woman that did just that. Ross had other accomplishments besides this but the flag was by far her most iconic achievement. Throughout Ross’ lifetime came many hardships and struggles. Today Ross is seen as an iconic woman figure in history. Betsy Ross was born in Pennsylvania and remained there most of her life. Betsy Ross was born as Elizabeth Phoebe Griscom to parents Samuel and Rebecca on January 1, 1752. Betsy was the eighth of their seventeen children, but only nine survived childhood. Ross grew up in the Quaker religion but faced expulsion from the congregation when she eloped in 1773 to marry her first husband John Ross, an Anglican. She met John when they were both apprenticing upholsterers. They later started their own upholstery business together. They were only married for two years and had no children when John went to fight for the revolution and died of a gunpowder …show more content…
There is no documentation other than oral tradition to say whether or not that Betsy made the very first American flag. When historians look into this they see no evidence of her making it but none of her not. There were many other upholsterers that could have very well made the flag themselves. The first mention of the story of Betsy Ross in history is in her grandson’s writings in 1870. According to her story the Congressional Committee called upon her at her shop in May of 1776 and she either finished the flag in late May or early June. Betsy Ross is a symbol in American history. There is the “Betsy Ross House” where her remains are also buried. Betsy had a postage stamp dedicated to the 200th anniversary of her birth in 1952.
