Under the instruction of the Naval Commanding Officer, the submarine was targeted by the USS Chicago. Under this realisation, the Japanese midget submarine fired 2 torpedoes at the ship. One of the torpedoes hit the shore but failed to detonate while the other exploded under a depot ship, killing 21 sailors. Followed by these attacks the submarine retreated back out of the harbour.
The third and final submarine was sighted by a naval ship as it entered the harbour, the Australian navy retaliated and damaged the submarine. Four hour after the attack on the submarine, the final Japanese submarine recovered and began its approach, but this was met with great retaliation and once again the underwater vessel was depth charged, once and for all sank in Taylors Bay. The 2 crew members aboard like the first committed suicide.
