How Did Atticus Lose The Trial In To Kill A Mockingbird

Improved Essays
In this journal I will be predicting the case verdict in pages 208- 281. The first thing that I predict is that the Ewell’s will lose this case. For instance I think they will lose is because Atticus got evidence from when Mr. Ewell is on the stand he is left-handed. I infer form this evidence that he beat up Mayella because people who are left-handed beat up the right side of someone. I think her dad raped her because when he was on the stand from the text of the book it seemed as if he knew exactly what happened. It seems as if Mr. Ewell was there because he knew her exact injuries. Another reason I think that the Ewell family will lose the case is because Atticus asked the exact question multiple times, but in different context. When Mayella answered it …show more content…
Another question I think the townspeople will ask Atticus is why would he defend a black person. Maybe the courthouse put Atticus up to the task, but I think Atticus wanted to defend Tom because he didn’t want to see an honest man go to jail without a fight. I also believe that Atticus wanted to defend a black man is because he wanted to show that not all back people are liars. The last question Atticus will be asked is why did he un-button his clothes when he was questioning his witness. I think Attics un-buttoned his clothes because he wanted to show the court he is a man with good intentions even if is defending a black man. He also un-buttoned his clothes to show Tom that this trial will be an “easy” one to win. Epically when Atticus is defending an honest man. I predict that the Ewell’s will lose the case, and after the trial is over Atticus will be questioned.

I will be characterizing Tom Robinson from the chapters 16-24. First off I characterized Tom to be truthful. I think he is truthful because in the book the person he worked for before the trial started they say “ Tom is a great worker, I have never had a problem with him on the farm” (Lee 254). I believe that he stood up and told

Throughout this journal, I predict that Tom Robinson will end up being guilty. One can see that Tom Robinson could be pronounced guilty for a few reasons. The first reason is when someone talked to Tom he did not respond and he just stayed silent. In the text it states, “the spectators were quiet, but the defendant said something. Atticus whispered to him, and Tom Robinson was silent” (Lee 233).…

Before the case began, the whites sat in the middle of the courthouse square while the blacks sat in the corner with Mr. Dolphus Raymond. Heck Tate, Mr. Ewell, Mayella Ewell, and Tom Robinson testify while Mr. Gilmer is the circuit Solicitor and Atticus defends Tom Robinson. In the end, Tom is guilty and when Atticus passes, the colored balcony of people stand. The town has mixed feelings of the jury’s decision. In this journal, I will be predicting the verdict of the case and evaluating the motive of why Mr. Ewell would lie.…

”page number!!!! This quote happened after the court case. He yelled at Atticus and was mad about how he was defending a black. He also mentioned that he was guilty since he was already black. This supports my Essential Question because both the jury and Bob just assumed that Tom was guilty because of what he looked like, what he wore, and not by how he acted, or…

Atticus Finch Defense Failed Because People in the jury didn’t like Negros, His world agented two white people, and Tom Robinson said he was sorry for a white woman. The other thing that Atticus defense failed was because the jury wouldn’t take a black man's world over a white man. The jury back then, was not racist and didn't believe anything he said. If tom hadn’t said that “ he felt sorry for maybell” Atticus defense wouldn’t have failed. Back then, No bunch of white people where ever going to take say Tom is innocent, When he "felt sorry" for a white person.…

Atticus Finch knows what he’s doing in this trial! In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch acts as a lawyer for a black man named Tom Robinson, who had been accused of raping a young white woman named Mayella Ewell. People had been shocked to hear and witness these events, and all the action takes place within the court...and quite a bit happens in these times of trouble. Atticus uses the persuasion methods of ethos, pathos, as well as logos to support his creation of reasonable doubt.…

Atticus said that “That Mayella Ewell had been beaten savagely by someone leading with their left hand.(Doc. B)” all evidence led to Mr.Ewell to be left handed because Tom could not hit her because he no longer had use of his left hand. She is powerful enough to win a case against a african american yet still go back to the life that offered her nothing even though she is white and is a…

Before the story has begun, the African American is already accused of raping a white, nineteen year old Mayella Ewell. Many townspeople of Maycomb believe that Robinson is not responsible for his crime because he is a hard-working and well-respected man. On the other hand, they disrespect and distrust the prosecutor, Mayella Ewell, because she belongs to a poor, disgraceful “white trash” family who lives by the town’s dump. The second evidence that proves Tom Robinson’s innocence is found in Mr. Ewell’s testimony on the rape. Mr. Ewell, Mayella’s father and one of the witnesses of the incident, tells Atticus, the lawyer of Tom Robinson, that he does not call a doctor for Mayella on that day.…

Unfair Discrimination Legal systems are classified as fair and equal to all citizens today, but looking back at past cases such as the dreadful Emmett Till case, and Tom Robinson from “To Kill a Mockingbird” things have really taken a leap from the atrocious treatment against blacks . Legal systems were one of the main bumps in the road when it came to discrimination against blacks. Whether it was a small case, or a huge case things in court always seemed to go in favor of white people. Some say white people just always had that unfair advantage, but it is something people will never know without living in the 30s through the 60s, with major segregation. During this time period court would have a separate place for black people to sit, away from the white people.…

He is on trial for being an accused rapist, but the audience notices something about him, his left arm is crippled , Atticus is in the testimony of Mayella, he explains to the court “He got it caught in a cotton gin...when he (a) was boy...like bled to death… tore all the muscles from his bones”(page 249). Him telling this to the court shows that he is incapable of physically harming Mayella Ewell. Another example is when Scout, Jem and Dill are present at the case listening to the testimony of Tom Robinson . Scout realizes the reasoning for Mayella to have went below her skin color to feel a type of connection with someone ,the explanation is shown by Scout thinking “As Tom Robinson gave his testimony, it came to me that Mayella Ewell must have been the loneliest person in the world”(page 250).…

Atticus has courageously raised his children to not judge others until you know their story and what they are going through. The texts also states, “I’m simply defending a ‘Negro’- his names Tom Robinson,” (Page 75). This is the most extreme example of courage in this novel because Atticus is defending an African-American during the time of racial segregation. Taking this case is potentially dangerous for Atticus considering the whites in Maycomb want Tom to be found guilty of rape. The town of Maycomb is upset with Atticus for defending him during the trial, nut Atticus still continues to do everything in his power to guarantee that Tom receives a fair trial.…

In this paragraph, I am going to be characterizing Tom Robinson. One word that depicts Tom Robinson would be honest. He is honest for many reasons. My first reason is that he is able to admit anything that he has done. In the courthouse, Tom admitted that he had been convicted for thirty days because he fought with a man and he could not pay the fine to get out (Lee 254).…

He proves that Bob Ewell was responsible for the crime. He gave it his best shot that he could but the jury was so caught up on Tom Robinson’s skin color. Atticus was not surprised by the conviction but was mad at how racism in Maycomb county can overrule the Justice System. In court he talks about how the jury would buy into the assumption that all blacks are evil and immoral. He then states that this assumption is false and that all men are created equal no matter what skin color.…

"Yeah, but Atticus aims to defend him. That 's what I don 't like about it." This exemplifies how the town resented Atticus for simply doing what he believe to be the right thing to do; which is why even though Atticus had no intention of influencing the town’s idea of justice for Tom Robinson, he influenced the white community, who just so happen to have been the ones to decide Tom’s fate. This once again proves that while unintentional a single individual how the power to alter or change what another person perceives as…

Mr. Gilmer suggests that Tom is guilty because he has a prior conviction. Mr. Gilmer says “‘What did the nigger look like when you got through with him?’... Atticus raised his head ‘it was a misdemeanor and it’s in the record’”(Lee 196).…
