Christian Influences Artists during the Renaissance era were influenced by many things. Before the Renaissance, artists used nature and the human form for inspiration. The Renaissance brought an entire new influence, and it gave the people Christianity. Christianity spread like wildfire in Europe, and the artists documented it all in their paintings. Nothing will ever influence art the way religion did.
Religion was never one of arts biggest influences, until the Renaissance. Rebirth in Europe meant washing out all of humanities old ideas, and finding ways to bring in new concepts. They sprung up all around Europe and many people enjoyed them. Within the walls of most basilicas, artists would decorate them. They would paint murals on the walls and ceilings that represented their faith. Artists would also illustrated scenes from the Bible in their own depictions (Britannica, Early Christian Art).
The need for representations of Christ’s life in Italy was based on practice within the Western Church. The images were valued for two reasons; as a lesson for the unlettered and for the aids to worship. Artists during this time would cover entire walls and ceilings in a church room. The images the artists would paint were depictions or scenes from the Bible. Many of the images were also illustrated on books and small altarpieces for private consumption (Bergdolt).
The paintings of Christ were meant to increase the experience of faith in both communal and individual worship throughout the land. During the Renaissance, theologians continually stressed the humanity of Christ. They believed that in order for people to lead a faithful life, one must follow after Christ’s own. Many artists stressed his human existence, and most favorably, Christ’s birth and death
