Capone was the child of Italian immigrants. Capone’s mother and father met in Italy before he was born. After they were married, they decided they could find a better life in America; as many immigrants did during this time period. When they arrived in America with four of Capone’s older siblings, they had no money but worked hard. When Capone was born, he was born into a respected poor working class immigrant family; nobody could have known he would become an infamous American criminal. In fact, when Capone started school, he was one of the brightest students. This spike in crime enabled Capone to become one of the biggest criminals in American history. During this time Capone began selling illegal liquor to anyone with money and desperate enough risk jail time for a drink. In order to hide his liquor sales he would set up bars in the basements of businesses nightly and paid the managers or employees closing up for the night to keep quiet. If they did speak with the police or anyone else who might tell the police, he would threaten to kill them and their families.
Despite the crimes noted above, Capone was sent to prison for not paying his taxes, however he initially continued to have power in prison. Capone paid guards to buy him fine cigars, nice meals and so he would not have to work. He would also pay guards to pass messages to his business associates in order to run his secret businesses.
