Praise is finally going throughout town since the day that the President of the United States was murdered. President Lincoln's funeral which is to be held on May 1st,1865 and to be in Washington, D.C. at the White House, which Lincoln is then to be transported back to his hometown in Illinois, John Wilkes Booth and David Herold were finally caught in a barn owned to the Garretts of Maryland for the murder of the President Abraham Lincoln on April 26, 1865. At first Herold surrendered and was taken into custody. Later on as the police tried to capture Booth and make him come out and surrender, he declined and so the only safe option the police had was to burn the barn down. Herold and the accomplices then finally gave up and told the police that they were survived by Thomas Jones which gave Booth and Herold food and water during their escape, Captain Cox which led the murders to the river, the Garrett sons which housed the assassins, and many more which were seized but later released. Stanton put on trial only eight defendants, Mary Surratt which helped Booth get his weapons and plan, Lewis Powell which attempted to kill the Secretary of State William Seward, David Herold which knew where Booth was and helped him escape, George Atzerodt which gave a boat to the assassins to row across the river to Virginia, Samuel Arnold which gave Booth and Herold a place to stay during the night, Michael O'Laughlen which his role in the assassin was unclear, Edman Spangler which held Booths horse the night of the assassination at the theatre, and Samuel Mudd which held Booth and Herold in his barn for one night until the capture. On the day of July 7th, 1865 Mary Surratt, David Herold, Lewis Powell, and George Atzerodt are to be hung and killed for their help in the assassination of the president. The police figured out what way the assassins were going and knew that they would try to escape to Virginia. Luckily the citizens wanted to know where Booth was and they gave up the direction that they saw the two men going. Abraham
