The year 1984 was a significant year for film due to the introduction of several influential movies, unique use of special effects, and a new rating system.
Several of the movies that were released in 1984 “set a template for sequels”(Truitt 1) and created “the franchises of today”(Truitt 1). The Ghostbusters franchise took off after the movie turned out to be a massive success. Spawning spin-offs (and knock-offs), cartoons, comics, tv shows, and of course, sequels, Ghostbusters proved to be incredibly lucrative, despite how bizarre its premise was. People were having their “mind blown with a season full of influential hits.”(Truitt 1) Films like The Terminator kickstarted a profitable franchise that continues to this day. Meanwhile, films like Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and Star Trek III: The Search for Spock contributed to their respective franchises and generated hype for more sequels. These movies went on to become classics in the coming future.

In response, the PG-13 rating was constructed to counter the “complaints about intense, violent scenes.” (“Parents Wrestle with PG-13 Movie Ratings for Preteens” 1) Previously, films like Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Gremlins had been rated as PG. Now, however, there was a middle ground to divide films into and this set new standards for what could be shown in film.
