In the 1960s, people believed that this was the beginning of a golden age, but the golden age never happened instead the nation was falling apart. John F. Kennedy became president in 1961, but in 1964 he was shot and killed, most people felt their hopes were killed. The 1960s was defined by the Civil Rights, the government stayed out of the Civil Rights until 1964. People were starting to drop out of political life, and they were called hippies. African Americans and other racial groups were getting tired of waiting for equality so they started protesting. Afros, go-go boots, bell bottoms, lava lamps, turtle-necks, and tie-dye shirts were very popular. People started having computers, landlines, and tape records and other things that started coming out in the 60s.
