This guided me to think about the gender difference, I asked myself ‘why men are less likely to have high tea with their buddies?’ and ‘Does it mean desserts are being symbolized as feminine?’ I remembered most of the children love candy due to its sweetness, but after becoming grown ups, men slowly abandoned this ‘childish’ taste in order to show their maturity. As image of men are expected to be more mature and masculinity, so they reject any activities and even foods that are overly womanized. It was interesting to listen to a pair of couple taking their orders who were sitting next to me, the boy was more decisive and ordered a cup of black coffee and sandwiches, while his girl friend asked suggestions from both the waitress and the boy. The waitress advised to have their brownie instead of strawberry cake although cake is more cuter looking, however, the girl still went with the cake. This brought me to think about the indecisiveness of most females, it might because of men who played a more dominant role of the society since ancient times. If not the reason of seeking advices from people could be as analyzed by Daniel Miller, that women treats their options as an agent for securing relationships. By seeking advices from their partners, they showed their respect and concerns about others’ opinions as a tool of socializing although they might still go with their previous thoughts. During my observation, one of the differences in eating habits between different genders is also worth to mention is that, when the foods are served, the boy would start to eat them straight away. On the other hand, most of the females in the restaurant would take a few pictures at the foods and post them online, especially on those beautifully decorated foods such as cakes.
