This form of communication also allows the user to hide behind a fake or altered profile so that they have the confidence to talk to other people. A real-world example of this comes from the short documentary ““5 Stories from the Internet” When Strangers Click” directed by Robert Kenner. Jonas Tancred lived on a secluded island in Sweden and had no way of meeting new people unless he travelled across shore to the small town. Jonas created an avatar that looked nothing like him. Jonas liked to sing and play guitar, so the avatar allowed him to play and sing in front of other avatar users in a small bar. One day an avatar girl came along and decided to help Jonas play at bigger venues in the avatar world. After a while they fell in love and decided to get married in the game. When the time came to meet finally Nichol or Beth was shocked by how he really looked in person but nonetheless, they had a one-night fling and had a child together. Claim that they simply cannot think without their hands on the keyboard” (Turkle, 3) this is where computer addiction can come into play. As stated in Ed Grabianowski “How Computer Addiction Works”, “Creating a single definition for a computer adduction is difficult because the term actually covers a wide spectrum of addictions” (Grabianowski,1). Addiction can be anything between the way a computer works to the special entertainment it provides. A computer addict can be addicted to the sound and touch of a key board or the very feel of the object itself. Addictions can be brought on by any way. Computer addiction can cause serious issues pertaining to child neglect. According to Grabianowski, Michael and Iana Straw neglected their children “to the point of malnourishment and serious health problems because the couple was so obsessed with playing online games” (Grabianowski 2). This is extremely unfortunate and shows the people of the world that online addiction can be harmful and dangerous.
