Client is grieving the loss of her husband who recently passed away soon after their 50th anniversary from a sudden heart attack about 6 months ago. She was recently assessed by an APS social worker and was referred to a social worker to follow-up in order to share her background, as well as develop goals and objectives to guide her transition to living alone.
Information and History
Client is a Caucasian female and appears in her late 70s. She retired at age 65, but worked in retail for most of her life. During her retirement years, client reported traveling, visiting her kids and friends. She often enjoyed reading, and volunteering. Client stated she no longer volunteers, visits her friends and does not engage in any of her hobbies. She acknowledges her children as her purpose in life. She denied suicidal ideation, as well as any homicidal thoughts. She expressed interest in linking to a grief counselor to manage her emotional and psychological health.
Summary of Geriatric Depression Scale
Joseph was administered a brief depression inventory, and received a score of 12. Her response to the test, indicated that she is not at suicidal risk, however, her score indicated a high propensity for depression. During the inventory, she expressed loss of satisfaction with her life, losing interest in once pleasurable activities, feelings of emptiness and helplessness. However, she was also able to acknowledge that her situation is not hopeless, her memory is intact, and she wants to be alive.
