He states, “She and her mother argued all the time, but they never came to blows; Kietha believed it was wrong to strike an adult...Kietha states, “So that's why i used to come to school just to fight...that was the way for me to relieve the stress” (Tough 44,45). By saying this, it allows Tough to incorporate pathos in his writing. This quote helps the reader understand Kietha suffered an abusing life but was too afraid to express it to her mother which impacted her behavior at school.
In chapter 2 section 4 titled Character Strengths, Tough stresses on character. “Character Strengths and Virtues was an attempt to inaugurate a “science of good character”... “Character… a person of good character was one who displayed values like chastity, thrift, cleanliness, piety and social propriety” (Tough 58).
